Bupa Global: cover benefit by benefit

IPMIBenefits reads Bupa Global's five-plan ladder by benefit rather than by annual limit, because on this range the plan name decides whether dental, maternity or health checks are covered at all, and the waiting periods decide when.

Last updated: 20 October 2026 · Reviewed by IPMIBenefits
In short: Bupa Global's individual range is a ladder of five plans, Major Medical, Select, Premier, Elite and Ultimate, and the plan name rather than the annual limit decides which benefits you get. Routine dental needs Premier or above after six months, health checks start on Select after ten months, and maternity needs Elite or Ultimate after 18 months. History is declared and reviewed, with no moratorium option.
Key takeaways
  • Major Medical has a higher annual limit than Select or Premier but is hospital-focused and does not include dental or maternity.
  • Routine and major restorative dental is covered on Premier and above after a six-month wait; accident dental from day one.
  • Maternity and assisted fertility are on Elite and Ultimate only, after 18 months on the plan.
  • You declare your full history and Bupa may cover, load or exclude a condition; undisclosed conditions are not covered.
  • No GP referral is needed to see a specialist, and virtual GP consultations are included on every plan at no extra cost.

Plans and cover levels

Bupa Global is the international arm of Bupa and sits at the premium end of international private medical insurance (IPMI): high annual limits, direct access to specialists without a referral, and a concierge service at the top of the range. The individual range is a ladder of five plans. One thing to notice straight away is that the ladder is not ordered by limit. Major Medical is a hospital-focused plan with a higher limit than Select or Premier, which instead add everyday benefits.

PlanAnnual limitWhat it is for
Major Medical£2,000,000Hospital-focused protection for large medical events
Select£1,000,000Adds day-to-day benefits: health screenings, physio, mental health, complementary therapies
Premier£1,500,000Select benefits at higher limits, plus optical and dental
Elite£3,000,000Adds maternity cover and assisted fertility treatment
UltimateUnlimitedNo overall limit, Lifecare Concierge Manager, two children to age 16 at no extra cost (subject to underwriting)

Figures are from Bupa Global's published 2026 plan comparison. The exact plans and benefits vary by country of residence, so the brochure and your country-specific table of benefits are the authority. Rehabilitation cover is 45 days on Major Medical, 30 on Select and Premier and 60 on Elite.

Every plan offers a choice of area: Worldwide, including the USA, or Worldwide without U.S.; Select, Premier and Elite also offer Europe (including UK) (Bupa Global Health Plans brochure, April 2026, Bupa Insurance Limited, UK edition, pp.11-12, read 19 October 2026). Cover is the same at home and abroad within the area you choose, and leaving out the USA is usually the single largest saving.

What this plan does for each benefit

Bupa's published benefit list is one of the more complete on this site, which makes the benefit-by-benefit reading IPMIBenefits prefers straightforward. For each benefit, the plan that unlocks it and any waiting period:

Read the ladder by benefit, not by limit. Routine dental needs Premier or above; maternity or fertility needs Elite or above. The higher limit on Major Medical does not buy either.

Waiting periods that shape the decision

BenefitWaiting periodPlans
Routine and major restorative dental6 monthsPremier, Elite, Ultimate
Health checks and screening10 monthsSelect and above
Maternity (incl. complications and Caesarean)18 months on the planElite, Ultimate
Assisted fertility treatment18 monthsElite, Ultimate

Eighteen months is at the long end of the market for maternity; Now Health WorldCare Apex, for comparison, uses 12. If starting a family is part of the plan, the waiting period matters more than the headline benefit. Our guide to limits, sub-limits and waiting periods shows how to line these dates up with your plans.

Underwriting and pre-existing conditions

Bupa Global publishes a clear account of its own approach, which in market terms is full medical underwriting:

The upside of this approach is certainty from day one and the real possibility that a declared condition is accepted. The trade-off is that there is no moratorium route. Our pre-existing conditions guide explains the alternatives; Nomi can flag the implications, and an experienced adviser confirms the terms before you buy.

Service and digital care

Who Bupa Global suits

A strong fit if you want a premium plan with very high or unlimited limits, no-referral access to specialists, strong cancer and mental health cover, and digital GP access on every plan, with a concierge service at the top of the range.

Worth comparing alternatives if price is the main driver, you need maternity or dental sooner than the 18-month and 6-month waits allow, you would prefer a moratorium underwriting option, or you only need cover in one region. Browse the insurer hub or start with the benefit guides.
