Allianz Care vs IMG Global (GPMI), benefit by benefit

Two of the most underwriting-flexible insurers in international private medical insurance (IPMI), but they flex in different directions. IPMIBenefits reads Allianz Care and IMG's Global Prima benefit by benefit, for individuals and for groups.

Last updated: 20 October 2026 · Reviewed by IPMIBenefits
In short: Choose Allianz Care if you are an individual with medical history who values a choice of underwriting basis, FMU, Moratorium, CPME or switch terms, behind a core-plus-modules plan. Choose IMG Global Prima if you want dental and maternity as pay-only-if-needed options or you are buying group cover, where its Medical History Disregarded basis can set members' history aside. Neither is reliably cheaper.
Key takeaways
  • IMG offers routine maternity as an optional add-on on all five tiers with a 10-month wait; Allianz covers it on Care Enhanced and Signature after 12 months.
  • Both make dental optional: Allianz's module sits at your core level, IMG's has a 6-month wait with accidents covered immediately.
  • Allianz's out-patient cover is a module matching the core; IMG's out-patient cover is in the core and scales by tier.
  • Medical History Disregarded is only for company or group schemes meeting a minimum number of lives, not for individuals.
  • Allianz pays 80% inpatient and 50% other benefits if pre-authorisation is skipped; IMG wants planned treatment authorised five working days ahead.

Where each one wins

Allianz's edge is individual underwriting choice and brand. For a person with medical history, being able to pick Full Medical Underwriting (certainty from day one), Moratorium (no health questions, a 24-month wait on pre-existing conditions) or CPME and switch terms is genuinely valuable, and you get the backing of one of the world's largest insurers with a clean core-plus-modules structure.

IMG's edge is modularity and group cover. Dental and maternity are bolt-ons you add only if you need them, each with its own waiting period, and for company or group schemes IMG's Medical History Disregarded (MHD) basis can set members' medical history aside entirely, subject to a minimum number of lives that varies by insurer. If IMG cannot offer the underwriting type you applied for, it may offer an alternative.

Both are core-plus-options plans, so neither bundles everything in. Allianz's out-patient and dental modules must sit at the same level as the core; IMG's out-patient cover is in the core and scales by tier, with dental and maternity as separate decisions. Our guide to what each benefit adds to the cost explains how to compare two modular quotes fairly.

Benefit by benefit

What each insurer publishes for the eight benefits IPMIBenefits tracks: Allianz from its Table of Benefits, Care, valid from 1 November 2025 (read 19 October 2026), IMG from its published summary. Where a document is silent we say so.

Allianz publishes every benefit above in its Table of Benefits; IMG's summary is structural, so for cancer, evacuation, mental health and wellness ask IMG for the table of benefits at your level before you compare.

Claims, pre-authorisation and servicing

Allianz requires pre-authorisation for inpatient and high-cost treatment, flagged in its table of benefits. If you skip it and the claim is later eligible, Allianz pays 80% of inpatient benefits and 50% of other benefits. Emergencies must be reported within 48 hours of admission and invoices submitted within 60 days of discharge; out-patient and dental claims generally go through the MyHealth app.

IMG asks for planned inpatient or day-patient treatment to be pre-authorised no later than five working days before admission. Once authorised and eligible, it issues a Guarantee of Payment to the hospital and settles directly. The MyIMG / MyALC member area handles pre-authorisation, claims and documents, backed by a 24-hour helpline and WhatsApp. Our pre-existing conditions guide covers the underwriting routes both insurers offer in more depth.

FAQ

Is Allianz or IMG cheaper?
Neither is reliably cheaper. Price depends on your age, country, cover level, excess and the optional benefits you add. IMG's modularity can lower its price if you skip dental and maternity. Compare both live for your situation.
Which is better for pre-existing conditions?
Both are flexible. For individuals, Allianz lets you choose FMU, Moratorium or switch terms. For groups, IMG's MHD basis can disregard medical history entirely, subject to a minimum number of lives. IPMIBenefits suggests the right route depends on whether it is individual or group cover.
Which is better for a company or group scheme?
IMG often wins for groups thanks to its Medical History Disregarded option. Allianz also offers group cover; the best choice depends on group size, member health and price, which is why you compare both.
Which one includes maternity?
IMG offers routine maternity as an optional add-on on all five tiers with a 10-month waiting period. Allianz covers maternity on Care Enhanced and Care Signature after a 12-month waiting period, routine maternity up to US$6,750 or US$13,500 per pregnancy (Table of Benefits, Care, valid from 1 November 2025, p.11).
